Tyndall effect indicated path of light. it mean, due to scattering of light you can see path of light.

What is tyndall effect?

First of all, We know how we see any object. when the rays of light emanating from the object fall properly on our eyes then we are able to see an object with our eyes. Otherwise, we are not able to see any object with our eyes. Just because, if the rays of light emanating from the object do not fall properly on your eyes, then you will not be able to see that object.

if there was no scattering of light, we would not see anything. and if the scattering of light take place we will see it. because where, there is scattering of light, the rays of light of scattering fall on our eyes, due to which we are able to see an object with our eye. Due to scattering of light we are sometimes able to see the path of light, this phenomenon is called tyndall effect. Scattering of light is depends upon size of particles. If the size of particles is large then it gives better scattering of light but if the size of particles is small then it gives poor scattering.

Due to small size of particles, they will scattered only blue colour but in case of bigger size of particles, they will scattered all colour. where, there is no scattering, the light rays of scattering do not come out. due to which the path of light is not visible. But where, there is scattering, the light rays of scattering come out. due to which ) path of light are properly visible. Scattering of light is depends upon the size of particles. if we talk about small particles, small particles scatter only the blue colour. But if we talk about bigger particles, bigger particles scattered all colour. there is a difference in scattering if there is a different in the size of particles.

Example of Tyndall effect

There are many way, we can see the path of light (tyndall effect).

These are the best examples of tyndall effect.

• When you open the window of your room in the morning. you can see the rays of sun light. and you can also see the path of light. but

Why the path of light is visible?

Because there are many dust particles moving around in the air. they grow up. and these big dust particles scattered all the colour. this is the reason, we can see the path of light and of sun light.

Due to scattering of light we are sometimes able to see the path of light this phenomenon is called Tyndall effect.

• When the sun comes out after the rain in the forest, then you can see the rays of sunlight or path of sunlight. it mean, the path of light is visible. but why does it look like this. “what will be reason”?….because water droplets are bigger. thay scatter all the colours. this is the reason, we can see the path of light after rain in forest. this phenomenon is known as tyndall effect.

Tyndall effect

• Milk is the best example of tyndall effect, when a beam of light is directed at a glass of milk. the light is scattered. because large particle is scattered all colour. and when the scattering of light falls on the eye. the path of light is visible. this is the reason, we will able to see any objects or any path of light.

Frequently Asked questions

1 Why does water not show tyndall effect?

First of all, i want to tell that bigger particles scatter all the colour, while small particles scatter only blue colour. this is the basic concepts of scatter of light.

In case of water, water has large particles so, they scatter all the colours. so, the path of light is visible here. due to scattering of light. we are able to see path of light, this phenomenon is called Tyndall effect.

When the light is directed on the glass of water the light is not reflected when the passing through the water. reason is, it is not colloid.

but when the light is directed on the glass of milk, light is easy to reflected all the direction when pass through the milk. it mean, milk is colloid and due to this reason Tyndall effect show in milk.

2. What is Tyndall effect in rubber?

Due to basic concepts of scatter of light, in case of very small particles size, they scattering only blue colour not all colour. this is the reason, they do not scatter a beam of light passing through the solution. due to this Tyndall effect is not show in solution.

3. Does sodium chloride show tyndall effect?

Not, Tyndall effect does not show in sodium chloride just because size of particles. very small particle size persent in sodium chloride solution. When the beam of light pass through the solution. the colloid particle in solution do not allow the beam to completely pass through. this is the reason, Tyndall effect is not show in solution.

4. Which colour of light is scattered maximum in the atmosphere?

The molecules of air in the atmosphere have their size smaller than the wavelength of visible light. and you know that, very small particles size is scatter only blue colours. they are more effective in scattering light of shorter wavelengths.

for example – blue light Not Red colour

But if I talk about, the red light, it has a larger wavelength compare with blue light. Thus, when sunlight is passing through the atmosphere, it is ture, very small particles in air is scatter the blue colour compere with red colour. and blue colour more strongly than red.
