Helo, reders today we will discuss about dyeing of textile fabric with turmeric or turmeric dyeing methods.
here, we will also discuss about how to dyeing  fabric with turmeric.
Let’s get started,

Dyeing fabric with turmeric process

Natural dyes has been used in most of the ancient civilization. such as India, Egypt, etc. In India, the use of natural dyes are in painting and printing.
Mostly natural dyes are used for dyeing, printing and painting in India.
They are extensively used as cosmetics for woman.
some examples are heena/ mehadi for decorating the palms and soles young maidens.
‘surma’ to enhance the effect of eye lashes.
Natural dye is also used in food and confectionary.
ex; saffron, turmeric, kashmiri chilli, and ratanjyot.
Because of the wide use, these dyes have become a part and parcel of Indian life.
the use of natural dyes for textile dyeing almost disappeared, due to wide range of synthetic colours available, with good fastness properties at low to moderate cost.

Classification of dyes;

1. Anthraquinones

Below are the some of dyes based on Anthraquinones based structure, in this famous colour is natural red.

2. Indigoid

Below are the some of dyes based on indigoid based structure,
in this famous colour is natural blue.

3. Flavonoid

In this famous colour is natural yellow, brown.

4. Dihydropyrane

In this famous colour is natural black.

5. Diferuloye methane

in this famous colour is natural yellow.

Turmeric dyeing;

Turmeric dyeing

A natural dye is extracted from turmeric and used to dye
cotton at different conditions.
Then the fastness properties of the dyeing with different dyeing techniques are compared.
the dye is found good saturation and rubbing fastness, but poor washing and light fastness properties on cotton, Applied without any mordant. when dyeing is implemented with
mordants, washing fastness.
the light fastness properties show improved while rubbing fastness exhibits deterioration.

Mordanting of natural dyeing:

There are two kinds of natural dyes: substantive and adjective.
SUBSTANTIVE dyes need no mordants to help them adhere to
the fiber.
ADJECTIVE dyes do. the mordants join with the fiber and the dye
to set the colour permanently. it enters deeply into the fiber and when
the dye is added, they combine to form a color.

Product specification:

parameters                                             value

Methods of dyeing with turmeric

Material

Fabrics: 100% cotton fabric ready for dyeing with turmeric as a natural dye.
Fabric particulars:
1. warp counts- 60s
2. weft counts-60s
3. EPI – 60
4. PPI – 58

Chemicals used in turmeric dyeing
Turmeric dye, Harda, Behera, Banana pseudo stem sap,
potassium permanganate (KMnO4)

Turmeric dyeing (methods)

first off all, Natural turmeric were washed with water and dried.
then crushed into coarse powder form for extraction. in order
to determine the optimum extraction conditions.
1. A set of sample of crushed turmeric powder, dissolved in
distilled water with a liquor ratio 20:1 and subjected to stirring
at room temperature  for 10 minutes.
2. A set of samples soaked in water and then subjected to stirring
at boil for 30 minutes.
Dyeing were carried out at 60 degree c, with 20:1 liquor to goods ratio
for 60 minutes.

Cotton dyeing with turmeric

(Mordanting)

here, 4 mordants are used such as, Harda, Banana pseudo stem sap,
potassium permanganate ( KMnO4).
mordanting carried out through three way
1. pre-mordanting
2. simultaneous mordanting and dyeing
3. post mordanting

Pre-mordanting with Harda

Cotton dyeing with turmeric

The fabric was treated with a mordant concentration of 5%, 6%,

7%, 8%, 9%, and 10% on weight of fabric at 60C for 30 minutes
the material to liquor ratio use for mordanting was 1:20.
after the mordant material was dyed at 80C for 60 minutes.

pre-mordanting with Behera, Banana pseudo stem sap and potassium

permanganate

carried out in a similar manner as Harda

Simultaneous mordanting and dyeing with Harda

The fabric was treated with a mordant concentration of  5% to
10% on weight of fabric at the same dyeing bath at 80C for 60
minutes. the material to liquor ratio  for dyeing will be 1:20.

Simultaneous mordanting and dyeing with Behera,Banana pseudo stem

sap and potassium permanganate

carried out in a similar manner as Harda…….
Dyeing fabric with turmeric

post-mordanting with harda

The dyed fabric was treated with mordant at 60C at concentration
5%…to…10% for 60 minutes with M:L 1:20.

Post-mordanting with Behera, Banana pseudo stem sap and

potassium permanganate

Carried out in a similar manner as harda

Instrument used in cotton dyeing with turmeric

  Instrument used
1. Rota dyer dyeing
2. Spectrophotometer with computer                          colour strength Evaluation
3. Laundro  meter                                                       washing fastness
4. crock meter                                                              Rubbing fastness

Testing and Analysis of cotton dyeing with turmeric

1. K/S value of dyed sample with CCM
2. washing fastness recommended in ISO 3 methods
3. Rubbing fastness : recommended in ISO 105.
4. Light fastness ( ISO 105-A02:1993)
5. COD.

Limitation of natural dyeing :

1. Lesser availability.
2. Poor colour yield.
3. Complexity of dyeing process.
4. Non reproducibility of shade.
